Speech can be beneficial for people who have had strokes (CVA), Neurological diseases (Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, etc), Brain Injury (TBI) etc.
APHASIA: A language disorder where language comprehension and production are affected.
APRAXIA: (oral/verbal): A disorder of volitional movement in the absence of muscle weakness, paralysis and fatigue in sequential movement of the oral musculature.
ARTICULATION: Difficulty with producing speech sounds correctly by omitting, distorting, or substitution of sounds.
COGNITIVE/MEMORY/DEMENTIA: Deterioration in intellect, memory, communication, general behavior including one or more characteristics of aphasia, apraxia, agnosia, dysphagia, impaired executive function.
DYSARTHRIA: A group of motor speech disorders of the speech mechanisms (oral motor) resulting from disrupted muscular control. Oral communication problems due to weakness, decreased coordination or paralysis of the speech musculature are evident.
DYSPHAGIA: Disorders of swallowing associated with many medical conditions including neuromuscular deficits, cancer, dementia, etc. This may be oral, pharyngeal, esophageal causing aspiration resulting in pneumonia.
FLUENCY: A disruption in the smooth, flowing, effortless, rapid speech production that contains excessive amounts of pauses, repetitions, sound/silent prolongations, interjections when trying to speak.
LARYNGECTOMY: Surgical removal of all or part of the larynx due to disease or trauma. We can provide pre/post counseling and training about verbal/non-verbal expression techniques including esophageal speech, electrolarynx, and communication systems.
RIGHT BRAIN SYNDROME: A syndrome of brain injury sustained in the right hemisphere. Causes includes CVA, TBI, Neurological disease processes, etc.
TBI: This is involving the brain by closed head (non-penetrating) or open head (penetrating) injury leading to various symptoms including memory, word finding/aphasia, slurred speech,etc.
VOICE: Disorders of communication due to faulty, abnormal, inappropriate phonation, loudness, pitch, resonance, caused by vocal abusive behavior, trauma to the larynx, physical disease.
